As I immerse myself more and more into young children's television programming, the more I learn new things. Things like ho to sing the alaphet in an annoyingly high pitched tone and a high pitched voice. Or how to play with puppets. Or, my personal favorite, how to speak broken spanish thanks to Dora and Diego. Ahh, the wonders of children's programming.
Last night, as we were watching The Santa Clause, I learned a lot.
1) The 'Claus' in 'The Santa Claus' is actually 'Clause" like the type of clause you learn about in school. Crazy, huh? I never noticed until last night.
2) The voice of Handy manny is none other than Wilmer Valderrama! If you've never seen the show (which I bet you haven't because you are not surrounded by kids 24/7), this show is Playhouse Disney's (Disney's equivelent to Nick Jr) version of Dora or Diego. This Manny dude is a handy man. And, just like Dora and Diego, he teaches kids broken spanish. I say if you're going to try and teach spanish, at least teach full phrases, not just useless words like "estrella" or "come on, vamonos." Really, if any child depending on Dora, Deigo, or Manny's taught spanish ends up in Mexico, they are screwed.
Maybe I'm just stubborn that I can't watch t.v. Or maybe its the fact that I went to bed at 4 a.m. studying and just woke up to the sounds of screaming kids. Either way, childrens programming has a flaw. And in case you were wondering, yes, I think the name "Handy Manny" is dirty. Handy Manny and his tools just sounds wrong.
